The Paps of Jura

The word pap is an ancient word, of Old Norse origin, for the breast. You might be surprised, therefore, to find that the island of Jura has three of them.

They are of course mountains; they're grouped closely together in the southern part of the island. The middle one, Beinn an Oir, reaches a height of 2,574 feet (785 metres); this makes it a Corbett. The second highest is Beinn Shiantaidh (2,471 feet – just below Corbett height – pronounced Ben Shanty, unless I'm mistaken). The third is Beinn a'Chaolais; I don't have a height for this one (until I can get hold of Landranger 61), and my guess for the pronunciation is Ben a–Chay–o–lay. The Ch is of course pronounced as in 'loch'.
